Traveling from Xi’an to Chengdu is a journey through both time ⏳ and taste 🍲. Xi’an, once the capital of ancient dynasties, offers history carved in stone and clay. Chengdu, the heart of Sichuan, invites you to slow down with tea 🍵, massages 💆, and fiery hotpot 🔥. This 6-day itinerary blends iconic landmarks with cozy cultural immersion.
Day 1 – Arrival in Xi’an & Muslim Quarter 🌅
Morning: Arrive in Xi’an and check into a hotel near the Xi’an City Wall (西安城墙, Xi’an Chengqiang).
Afternoon: Visit the Bell Tower and Drum Tower, then walk or cycle along the City Wall, one of the best-preserved ancient fortifications in China.
Evening: Explore the Muslim Quarter (回民街, Huimin Jie), sampling street food favorites like roujiamo, pan-fried pancakes, and beef buns.
Day 2 – Terracotta Warriors & Ancient Xi’an 🏯
Morning: Head to the Terracotta Army Museum (兵马俑博物馆, Bingmayong Bowuguan) in Lintong, about 40 km from Xi’an.
Afternoon: Return to the city for 赳赳大秦 (Jiujiu Daqin), a cultural performance celebrating Qin heritage. Filming isn’t allowed, but the show is worth experiencing, it brings the history you’ve just seen at the museum vividly to life.
Evening: Dine at 永兴坊 (Yongxing Fang), a lively food street showcasing Shaanxi snacks. The quality here is carefully regulated, making it a trustworthy and delicious alternative to the Muslim Quarter.
Day 3 – Mount Huashan Adventure 🏔️
Full Day: Take the cable car up Mount Huashan (华山, Huashan), one of China’s five sacred mountains, known for its dramatic cliffs and breathtaking views. We took the north cable car and returned early, worthwhile for the scenery, though tiring.
Evening: Back in Xi’an, unwind with authentic barbecue at 壹家烧烤, where sitting outdoors with sizzling skewers makes for a joyful evening.

Afternoon: Visit People’s Park (人民公园, Renmin Gongyuan) to soak in Chengdu’s tea culture and catch a Sichuan opera performance.
Evening: Feast on a classic Sichuan hotpot, fiery, flavorful, and unforgettable.
Day 5 – Sichuan Culture, Just Chill ☀️
Morning: Ease into the day with a local breakfast, a good cup of coffee, and perhaps a relaxing massage to embrace Chengdu’s slower rhythm.
Afternoon: Explore the historic Wuhou Shrine (武侯祠, Wuhou Ci) and then wander along Tibet Street, where vibrant shops and cultural influences create a lively, colorful atmosphere.
Evening: End the day with a comforting Sichuan grilled fish hotpot, a whole fish grilled to perfection before being simmered in a spicy broth with vegetables and herbs. This beloved local dish makes for a flavorful farewell dinner.
Day 6 – Relax in Chengdu 🍵
Daytime: Spend your final day sipping tea in traditional houses, strolling cozy streets, and soaking in Chengdu’s famously laid-back rhythm.
